Decker Wildfire Sunset

Mike · September 15, 2019 ·

Smoke from the Decker Fire fills the sky on Pueblo’s south side Sept.15, 2019. The wildfire, burning south of Salida, is reported to be nearing 300 acres in size. Photo by Mike Sweeney/©2019

Southern Colorado had eluded wildfire all summer, but with less than two weeks before the first day of autumn, the Decker fire ignited after a lightning strike in Chaffee County, about 100 miles of west of Pueblo.

About 300 acres of Rio Grande National Forest land had burned through Sept. 15 and smoke from the fire drifted toward Pueblo, transforming the evening sky into a spectacular burnt-orange sunset.
