Filing up the dogs’ water dishes this morning, I saw a cluster of wasps in our flower bed swarming over what I thought was something leafy but looking closer, it was like a scene lifted from “Starship Troopers.” The wasps were chowing down on a grasshopper. Wasps are carnivorous. Who knew? I guess there are some fat and happy wasp larvae nesting somewhere in the yard.
Despite the grasshopper’s demise, I’m fascinated by this moment. There’s alot going on: the repetition of yellow and black, the beating wings of the wasp in the upper right portion of the frame or the bite marks on the grasshopper’s leg or the ant on the leg of the wasp on the left.
And to think, this sort of thing probably happens in our yard every day.
